To Whom This May Concern:
Bobbie Jo King
Winter 1998

I have been residing at Liberty Court two years as of January. I and my 4 year old daughter came from being homeless and living off of welfare to where we are at this point. I was, and still am, very grateful for this housing opportunity. I then received a job working for the Sheraton. I have been employed 9 months. I have been on my feet with being able to provide for my daughter on my own for almost a year, up until now. I was excepting a raise in my rent because of me being employed but not such a raise as what has been expected I went from paying $83 in rent to $243 and this is why I’m writing. Please keep in mind, I receive no help for food stamps. No cash assistance, and no help for child care. I also do not receive child support. I do however receive $484 a month for disability for my daughter. I pay $320 a month for day care. $83 a month for rent and $250 a month for utilities. This is not including food, car insurance, gas, toilet paper or other accessories like clothes for my child. I spend a total of $653 a month just for rent, utilities, and child care. This is not including food and other. With taking in account my new raise in rent, I will be paying $160 more. Let it be known I am a part-time employee in which I may only work 15 hours a week at $2.60 and hour. I do realize my little girl receives disability but please keep in mind this disability goes towards her day care. Plus I feel my child’s disability has nothing to do with this. I have been struggling very hard to be on my feet and further myself along with my career to get us out of here and to build. I’m not going to make it with this raise. I have no choice other than to quit my job to go back on welfare or to be once again be homeless. Please help us. I do not want to be at that point in our lives again.

Management did not seem the least bit interested in my concerns. I feel the system is no longer working with me. I still need help and it seems no one no longer cares. I don’t feel as though my conversations with my manager were very professional on her behalf. I did expect a raise in my rent, and respect the fact, but not $243 a month. I am afraid because I cannot do this. I pay $80 weekly in child care even with a part-time job.
