2001 Kind Policy Awards

2001 Kind Policy Awards
At the October Leadership and Policy Conference, we thanked many friends of the work to improve housing and address poverty:

  • Alice Brandreth and Olga Ramirez for their work with the Public Assistance Taskforce,
  • Dr. Karen Curtis of the DHC Board for her efforts to help us understand the effects of income and poverty policies,
  • the Catholic Campaign for Human Development,
  • the Administrative Commission on the Speer Trust (Presbyterian Church, USA) for their support of the efforts of tenants in Delaware to organize,
  • the League of Women Voters in each of the three counties for their help making elections happen in rental communities throughout the state, and
  • Representative Michael Castle his support of legislation to uphold the rights of tenants to organize in private, subsidized rental housing.

The Kind Policy Award takes its name from the "Kind Hearted Woman" symbol of the Great Depression which became a way for transient men to communicate to the next one to come along that the house outside which the sign was scratched or drawn was a home where a meal might be obtained and human kindness was present.
