Homelessness in Kent County
Lisa States
Winter 1998

Hi, my name is Lisa States and I’m going to tell you a little about our family. No one in their life ever expects to be homeless. But it happens sometimes. This is the second time we have become homeless. We were staying with relatives, and I guess they just got tired of us living there. So they kicked us out with nowhere to go. My husband has told me being homeless made him feel ashamed. He said being the Man of the house he is supposed to make sure his family has a place to live, and he is responsible for taking care of us. When some people think of homeless people, they might think they are lazy or just don’t want to work, and that they could have done something to prevent it. But in most cases that is just not true. There are a lot of reasons why people become homeless. Most of which is not their fault and couldn’t be prevented. Our family has stayed at both shelters in Kent County, Delaware. If it wasn’t for these shelters I don’t know what we could have done. And if it wasn’t for Housing Counseling and The New Start Programs, we would probably be in the same situation.

These programs have helped us a lot. We were very thankful for the chance of Transitional Housing which gives you a little more time to save money and try to get your life together. Being homeless was especially rough on our two daughters. But we tried to talk to them the best we could. And told them that soon everything would be all right. I do believe we need more shelters in Delaware. Being homeless opens your eyes to a lot of things, especially since there are only 2 shelters in Delaware. I’d like to try and give a little advice to homeless people. Don’t think of yourselves ass bad people or you are no good because your homeless. You’re all good people, just keep tying to improve your live, and sooner or later things will get better. And try to get involved in all the programs you can, they are there to help you. I hope who ever reads this gets a little idea of being homeless and how it feels. I hope I will be able to help someone. I would like to Thank everyone who helped our family and that’s the New Start Program and Housing Counseling. Thanks for giving us a chance.

Thank you.
